I've been making my own cider lately using a brilliant little kit I bought off the internet for $25.00.
Lets you turn every day fruit juice from the supermarket into cider with an alcohol content between 2% and 14% depending on how long you let it ferment and how much sugar you add. All for about $1.00 a litre. It's cheaper than petrol.
Any juice or combination with the exception of citrus which goes horribly bitter. Makes it in the bottle it came in so there's no need for sterilisation and you get a semi still cider in the original packaging but if you use a clean empty soft drink bottle you get a sparkling cider. Can also ferment ginger beer made from a plant at home.
Very simple process. Tip out 1 cup of fruit juice, add desired amount of sugar, add measured amount of the provided yeast and screw on the special cap. Shake and leave for a few days, refigerate for 24 hours to stop fermentation and away you go. You get two caps for each of the thread types found on Australian juice bottle and they say there's enough yeast for about 75 litres my mate who put me onto it reckons closer to 150 litres.
I have told work colleagues about the kits and so far this calendar year know of ten people now doing it. My bosses uni student kids reckon he's better than the guy who turned straw into gold.
Not sure what the rules are here for promoting this sort of thing. I have no involvement in the company making and distibuting them but am a very satisified customer and wanted to share.
If it's OK to promote let me know and I'll edit in a link to their website and you can see for yourself. Our overseas mates needen't worry they do a kit to suit the threads of juice bottles from around the world.
