G'day Sorry if this is a real newbies question. I've used a weber before but I've never owned a "chimney" And am keen to find out as much as I can. As my son pointed out my weber died some 8 years ago when it didnt return from a "boys weekend " on Stradie, ( Stradbroke island ) he's over the guilt. Thanks in advance Dave

Very handy bit of gear and as many ways to light them as your imagination allows.
I use the wok burner on the gas bbq because I'm lazy.
One of the heatbeads brand ones ful of beads or charcoal is enough for a kettle cook usually.
Have a look on YouTube. There's heaps of demos on there.

What they do is give you a standard measure for basic kettle cooking as in half a chimney a side or as I do, one whole chimney poured up against one side and no baskets.
Why they work at starting the beads faster is that the starter fuel is concentrated and their design creates a Venturi of air rushing from bottom to top.
I Normaly pour out my heat beads just as the very top handfulll of beads are only just starting to burn on the edges. The reason for that is often I want to catch the peak heat climb In the kettle rather than in the chimney. They are well worth the twenty or thirty dollars and everything can be done in the kettle itself. They can and do rust up, Particularly in your seaside area as the extreme heat does away with any protective finish they have. Expect maybe five years service depending if you can bother to give them a wipe over with cooking oil after use. Probably last forever if you did that.

If you have an Anaconda store close by, They sell Spinifex starters for a really good price of $15 from memory.
Note the date on the pic below.
After that pic, the my Weber branded (pictured middle) was decommissioned, and then commissioned one of the Spinifex models into action.
That same starter is still going and has seen a hell of a lot of work, and more than my original genuine Weber one.
Whats more, integrity inspection has just been carried out on it, assessment results show that it is at mid-life. I should get another 12+ months out of it.
The other sits high on a shelf in my garage, BNWT
Last time I was at Ana... which wasn't too long ago, I spotted them so they haven't dropped the line.
Fully recommend these.

g'day since I only needed 12 lite beads or do to start a minion burn I decieded to build a mini chimney out of a S/Steel cutlery holder that was unused in the cleaning gear cupboard. I had a good collection of odds and ends lying around so it was not a long task once I'd started. Not the most professional looking thing but I recon it look a bit more battered after a bit of use. Regards dave

Wow, You are a cobbler Bit hard to tell from the pic, The majority of air needs to come from directly under the beads. Side holes around the beads arnt nessesary but don't hurt. A pic of undernieth will help ease my mind or confirm you arnt done cobbling yet.

I see now, Id raise it either on one inch legs or make a ring around the bottom wiffled with one inch holes. Or just sit it as it is over two pavers spaced apart. Open up the bottom holes a bit or make more. The fire starters go under the can and not inside. Great job, That should last well

It's just the way they are designed. Air and fuel from under. But if it's working with most of the air Comming in from the sides....... You know it's working when you see considerable flame rushing upwards as the beads ignite. If it's doing that then your good to go.

G'day I used those kero smelling firefighters and once they catch they had the heat beads hissing and going on. I would like to use some charcoal like I do to light the wood fired oven. I keep some in a can. Add a bit of metho and let it soak in. It gets things going alright without the petro-chemical smells. Have to give it a go. Regards dave
