Hi guys.....
A question for all you fishermen and seafood lovers out there. I want to cook a really yummie recipe from home but it is usually made with cod. I've been to a couple of Fishos around here and Atlantic Cod can only be found frozen. On the other hand there's lots of great looking fresh local fish available. Would you know which of these are similar to taste to cod?

I usually use Ling or Blue eye.
Ling is a good robust type of fish, firm flesh and nice taste.

I don't think I've ever had fresh Atlantic cod other than imported smoke flavoured. But I can gist the type of texture and flavour with a white flesh. Other than our native cods I second the Ling.
A few others that hold together and have that cod taste might be Shark, Skate, Hoki, Parrot fish. Hard to say without knowing what your fish monger has fresh.

Nearest thing to it is Hake, with Hoki a close second. Most of what is sold in Australia as Smoked Cod is South African, or local, Hake.

All these years I've been conned Here is one for YA, Sunday arvo we got the kids out of the house and headed down to a little country town call Tumbalgum that has a pretty good chipper. But it was closed between 3 and 5. A local on the street said there is a better fish and chip shop a mile down the road at a sugar mill town called Condong. And I've got to tell you it was ONE of the best battered fish and chips I've ever had. However the only choice was Gold band snapper, SW Barra or Orange Roughy. I don't like gold band so ordered two Barry's and two Orange Roughy. Both were beautiful eaten by the sides of the tweed river with the sun going down. Later I thought, Hang on? Orange Roughy? I thought they stopped fishing for those. That and the fish lives near 150 years old. It was very good however

It can be debatable if the average F&C owner even knows what a fish is. It can vary across the country of course but here they are pretty abysmal. Last weekend a mate came over and dropped by our local one on the way and picked up some chips to share and a burger for himself. The chips from there are always good, the fish we agreed long ago was not worth it, but the burger was damned good - says something Hake is indeed very close to cod, would be a perfectly ok substitute I'd think Ozy. Cheers

Unfortunately the Kiwis didn't and they send it over here. It's an odd situation where we take the moral high ground but then support others wh don't. Dave

Ozy, I found Atlantic Cod portions at ALDI today. They are in bags of frozen chunks. Not real cheap at $12.99 kg. Says on the bag available for a limited time. Packed in China from imported ingredient. Thought you might be interested. I picked up a 1kg bag out of curiosity. Any ideas as to what I could do with them? Something from your home town would be good

Thanks, That's looks good. Probably the best way to approach this snap frozen fish other than coating in some buttery sauce. I love the amount of garlic in that one
