I was just preheating the oven, and the inside layer of glass completely shattered...

Bugger. Another BBQ will probably be cheaper than fixing that and do most of the same things.

Meh. It's the landlord's problem.

Cripes, What do you suppose caused that? If it wasnt thermal something hard must have been in contact with the glass like a screw or something. Ive had a 3m x 1m 12mm glass building entry door shatter (explode) while I was up a ladder about to service it and take it down. Turned out the top and bottom patch fittings were not insulated from the fixing screws. Soon as I turned that 6mm allen key BANG, down she went all over me and my TA below. Glass is spooky stuff

Hmm, I was on a holiday in Mauritius some years ago now and was renting a villa. The stove had a hinged glass top that it said very clearly on the villa guide was perfectly ok to put down over just extinguished burners but not to have lowered when burners were lit. Seemed a bit odd, had never seen it before but it did give some extra bench space. We hardly used the stove anyway because there was a great wood-fired bbq on the villa's beach and the lady and I loved to cook on fire plus the owner's son dropped off fresh wood every few days. One evening the lady had just finished hard boiling some eggs for a salad, turned the burner off, closed the lid and brought the saucepan of eggs outside to cool before peeling them. There was an explosion from the villa like a bomb going off. We both rushed in and the kitchen was showered in glass. Called the owner next morning to be told it was the third time it had happened... Now she tells us The son came over with a replacement but we didn't bother to use the burners again. Glass is indeed spooky stuff, we were still finding bits of it around the kitchen when we left after two very enjoyable weeks Cheers
