I got sick of having a heap of small bits of charcoal that fell through the bottom of the chimney of through the grate in the BBQ's so I had a good look around at the junk near the shed and in to some recycling.
Had an old outdoor gas heater that fell of the trailer once and blew over a few times getting so bent out of shape I didn't think it was safe to use. The dome on the top was off when we moved and I got home from work one day to see my kids and all the neighbours kids using it as a toboggan down the muddy hill. So it sat behind the shed for a couple of years.
Spotted the nice perforated metal round bit at the top and figured if flame and heat could come out then it could go in so I took to it with the angle grinder and cut out the skeleton of a couple of charcoal boxes.
Riveted them together and ended up with two of these. I know I'll have to replace the rivets as they are aluminium but they were all I had in the shed at the time and I don't buy stuff for experiments. I use what is at hand.
Testing one now with a few left over bits from yesterdays chook and some shards and it is going well. Sits nicely on the wok burner to get started and takes no time at all.
Took 20 minutes to get the kettle to 200C at the grate and I'll see how long it lasts. If it goes to plan I'll be getting rid of about 6 kilos of tiny bits over the next few cooks.

I use my small, and I mean small, left over bits in my Hibachi that gets a fair bit of use. I pile them up in the Hibachi and put 5 or 6 bits that I've started in my chimney on top of them. With a little bit of fanning the whole lot is soon going. I don't waste much charcoal believe me.
Whenever I've finished cooking I put all the leftover charcoal, still burning, into an old stainless steel saucepan and put the lid on to kill the flame quickly. I save more charcoal like this than letting it go out in the kettle.

Don't talk to me about Hibachi. Had one lined up on the eBay 50% sale and the missus went off.
Apparently 5 BBQs is enough in some peoples minds.
Will buy myself one for my birthday and get the kids to give it to me. Either that or get lucky in a raffle.

Good thinking. I've been throwing it in the veg patch as collateral damage

I've got the BBQ Galore cast iron Hibachi as there's just the two of us, gets a lot of use. Speaking about multiple BBQ's there's just the wife and myself, but I have 1 Hibachi, 1 big & 1 small Weber Kettle, a small spit, and a big gasser that hasn't been used for 3 years. All but the gasser get regular use.

I keep forgetting that I even have an Hibachi, but they are great, especially for a stack of skewers. Sure there are some sexy ones around, dunno what the BBQG one is like Bill, but if you have a casual scour around some of the Asian supermarket places they turn up silly cheap from time to time. There's a Korean owned place down where I used to live which was were I found mine, twelve bucks, and so long as I keep it oiled it's sort of like woks that come from the same places, last ages. Actually in some ways the hibachi was what set me off on buying some charcoal, had always been beads or turds in the kettle. First bag of charcoal I picked up was pretty mashed but no problem in the hibachi It's rather amusing to do a bit of research on them, I just did because wanted to make sure I wasn't having a blonde moment but yeah, what I have qualifies. It's just a rectangular fire box about 400mm by 150m I guess, with some air holes in the bottom a real simple grill plate and a back with a couple of latches that some sort of 1/3 grill plates that came with it hook on to if that makes any sense. Works fine, although I do think the only thing I've ever cooked on it has been kebab skewers, kids had a thing for them for a bit Cheers
