Hi, There's been some chatter about a temperature gun I use to measure BBQ temperature (or pizza oven stone temp). So I thought I'd create a thread here for it (instead of it being buried elsewhere - which bugs me  The one I have has a D:S of 50:1 & a range to 1350C (or 2400 F) (see below) There are heaps of these on ebay but in my purchase of two I found some details which may influence which one you go for. 1. Temp range Common ranges are -50C to 380C - not real useful for BBQ - OK for general play since they are the cheapest say around $15 delivered -50C to 550C - OK for use (with a limit see item 2) - delivered around $20 - $30 above this there are some variations which I wont mention -50C to 1350C - the one I've now got. better range for BBQ since I was worried about destroying the sensor if I measure coals but pricey around $100+ 2. Sensor spot (called D:S) This is a measure of the IR spot size the gun measures the temp of. Basically the dot gets bigger as the distance increases. On the cheaper guns (380 & 550 ranges) the D:S if 12:1 This means at the following distances the spot size is 300mm 38mm 1.5m 132mm 3m 0.26m i.e. at 9 feet the spot is almost 1 foot in diameter The more expensive guns (1350C) the D:S ratio is 50:1 So at 1.5m the spot is 42mm & at 3m the spot is 80mm i.e. at 9 feet the spot is 3 inches
When I found out about the spot size (I had the 550C version) I found it to rough in sensing for my needs (or more correctly wants/wishes) so I got the more expensive one & am happy with it.
The other gun went to my Aunt who teases the cats with it - the laser dot is great for this

I was going to post in the thread this started in but agree gatsby, better in Gadgets I'd never realised that they had become so cheap until a few months back, may well have to pick up one just for the BBQ. I've had one, a Fluke, on my workbench for years, sort of the Rolls Royce I suppose, very tight tolerances, especially in spot size, can from in close tell me which stick of RAM in a PC is running hot, or what IC on a motherboard for that matter. Utterly unnecessary for the BBQ, but not what it is designed for of course. Fluke are just in a realm of their own, some of the best test and measurement kit there is, I'd be kinda lost when troubleshooting without my Fluke Multimeter Cheers |

It would have Been good if I was a little more informed when I bought the thermoworks 12:1 -60c to 550c.
However for its sole intended purpose it does the job.
Biggest bbq I've used it on was GORDY, Kevs Lang and it was quite handy.
Not just for cooking but working out hot and cool spots. That's about all I have a use for an IR surface temp reader.
Oh, I did once use it out fishing offshore looking for thin warm currents. It worked but at the same time you can also see the slicks of warm water

Eh, For cooking they are a "nice-to-have" hardly essential. For electronics they are a must-have really where thermal issues can present, especially in data centers. I've had mine so long that I've ALMOST forgotten the hassle of getting accurate temperature readings when building hot-rod computers Cheers |
