I was just about to stick a simple mince recipe up that uses a whole Dried and smoked ancho pepper (Poblano on the tree) Then thought hang on, Who has seen these let alone have them in stock? In the USA they are found in Mexican grocers and can be bought here from the likes of USA foods as a powder. But they are better whole. Has anyone seen them on a shelf? If not, I know what to do with the back paddock and an E bay account Found them at herbys for www.gourmetgroceronline.com.au/herbie-s-herbs-spices/herbies-spices-herbs-c-e/herbies-chilli-anchoThats only three peppers

I bought a pack of seeds from a bloke in QLD via eBay but not a single one came up.
Wanted about 10 plants so I could do some experimenting but isn't happening this year.
Local nursery is trying to get me seedlings before it's too late to get them in.
I'll post the result if they show up.

Good luck, I had one tree sprout from ten seed I imported from the US. Here it is today starting to spout new foliage and fruit. I didnt keep seeds But there are heaps in the smoked and dried ones in the pantry however I think several hours at 70c may have cooked them. Try Google Joe Sterner chilies in the US,

Hmm, Not tried growing them in WA, had a couple of plants in SA years back, those too came from US seed and only two ever sprouted but I had access to a greenhouse and a green-thumbed dad then . Magnificent chilli will have to try them here. Cheers

I've bought them from USA foods before, but their website currently says out of stock. I might try and germinate a few seeds, but they could be 'cooked'.

This is a chili I would like to try/grow. Been looking for something with flavor but not a lot of heat, this looks like it? Gus65 did you manage to get seedlings? I'm going to ask on garden express and see if anyone is growing them, maybe I can luck onto a couple of seeds. Mick if you have a few savory mince recipes you would like to share please post them, I'm a big fan, perhaps even a mince section

I love mince dishes to. As well as the old fiftys CWA take on curry, In particular mince curry Both tend to be Whats on hand but I will go back over my papers and see what sticks out and make a few with a photo shoot. Yes these chilies are what your looking for. Make sure you ask for POBLANO and not Ancho as that will draw a blank. They are more like a capsicum. If you fail, I've got you covered at least for next year. I intend to start a late crop from the single plant I have so there should be plenty seeds to go around late summer. Maybe even some dried peppers for sale on the cheap if all works to plan.

If anyone else is looking I ordered some ancho seeds from here Chilli seed bank a Sydney based company, seeds turned up within a week and they have a pretty good range of varieties. Got 6 out of 10 germinated and at the 2 leaf stage, will post some pics if I get fruit.

Get them just as they start to turn. That a great looking bush. I lucked out this year with US seeds, Wouldnt mind a small baggy of seeds. If you want to save seeds, let a few go red and ripe. They are packed with seed.

I'm getting excited as a few fruits are starting to turn red. Quite a few have started to rot and dropped of, not sure why. From what I've read on the net, for smoking and drying its best to let them go full red, hope they don't all drop off first. I spoke to a local vege farmer, he grows superb red capsicums, he will do a row or two for me next spring, should be a good haul which I'll smoke/dry and vac bag. I asked him if the seed in the green fruit would be viable, he said yes but the crop would yield about 1/3 the amount compared to seed from red fruit, also the ones from the lower branches give the best seed. I char grilled a green one to try and it was good, very distinctive flavor with a mild heat, can't wait to try a red one.

Looks like I'll have some good seed for next season. Hope to perfect smoke/drying with these and if my farmer mate pulls off a good crop next season, might be plenty of ancho to go around.

They are looking good. Chopped dried ancho is delishious in so many dishes from stews to taco mince.
